Lakesmere makes a splash at London Olympics

October 1st, 2012 Posted in: Project Focus

The Olympics and Paralympics were a truly breathtaking spectacle of not only sport, but also passion, dedication and respect, and have undoubtedly given the entire country a feel-good factor that we can only hope lasts far into the foreseeable future.

And now that the dust has finally settled on our magical summer of sport, what better time than to reflect on the vital role that Lakesmere played in both spellbinding events.

It was with great pride for everyone associated with Lakesmere that while the world’s eyes were trained on the fantastic Aquatics Centre for the stunning action in the swimming and diving events, they were also witnessing the breathtaking work carried out by our team of specialists in the shape of the Centre’s sweeping roof, which surely became one of the most iconic pieces of architecture at the Olympics.

In order to help bring to life the dramatic vision of architect Zaha Hadid, we utilised the highly flexible Kalzip XT aluminium cladding system. Designed to evoke the notion of a swimmer breaking the water, the striking wave-form roof smoothly sweeps upwards from the south edge before curving gently down at the northern side. A subtle upwards curve also features at both the eastern and western tips of the roof to further emphasise the structure’s fluid design.

While, the architectural and aesthetic demands were obviously critical, it couldn’t claim to be a success if the athletes didn’t feel comfortable in the environment. Rebecca Gallantree, a member of the 12-strong Team GB Diving team, has travelled the world for the last 12 years competing and has seen more than her fair share of aquatic centres. As she explains, the London Aquatic Centre wins the gold medal for innovative design: “I must have competed in over 100 aquatic facilities around the world but none of them have made an impression on me quite like the one in London. From the outside it’s a stunning building and gives you goose bumps and it doesn’t disappoint when you get inside. Standing at the top of the 10m board allows you to get a great feel for the sheer scale of the sweeping roof and provides a perfect backdrop in which to dive.”

Not only has Lakesmere’s work been recognised by Olympic athletes, but also at the Balfour Beatty London Aquatics Centre Supplier Awards where we received the prestigious ‘Product Performance Award’ for “achieving consistently high output through good planning and efficient working” throughout the design and installation of the Aquatics Centre’s complex roof package.

Everyone at Lakesmere can be very proud that they played a role in arguably this country’s finest hour…now, bring on Rio!
